Assignment:
Prepare a 15 minute presentation (including time for questions and answers) which covers the following information about your topic:
Introduction: Describe the features and functionality typically provided by this Topic or Category of tools (see the second column below).
Use cases: Provide three (3) concrete examples of who would want to use this tool and for what purpose. Each use case is a scenario - describe a user (individual or organization) that would find this tool helpful or strategic to accomplish a goal. Explain the user, the goal, and why/how this tool would help them achieve this goal.
Demonstration / tutorial: Choose one example website (from the third column below or another of your choice that fits into your topic). Give your fellow classmates a demo / tutorial to teach them how this website works.
Plan to leave 3-5 minutes available for questions and answers.
So for example, if Automated Cherry Picking was your topic:
Automated Cherry picking is a category of tools that picks cherries from trees and deposits them into baskets below. The baskets are typically then organized by ripeness and so on and so on...
People who like to eat cherries can benefit from this tool so that they do not have to climb the tree and risk injury. They can simply perform a visual search to find a basket of ripe cherries. Fruit orchards and other businesses that rely on cherries for income can benefit from this tool because it saves them money hiring people to climb trees and pick cherries. Etc.
Here is a popular Automated Cherry Picking website: http://pickmenow.com. Here is how you can log in and search to find cherries. Here is how you can find other people who enjoyed the same cherry baskets you enjoyed and you can find new enjoyable cherry baskets by looking at their favorites.
Format:
Please prepare your presentation in any format you wish. It is not important to me for you to use presentation software like Powerpoint, but you are certainly free to do so. You can also use the whiteboard, index cards, or whatever you wish. Use whatever format and tools you are most comfortable with. You will, however, most likely wish to use the projector and the class computer or your own laptop for the demo/tutorial portion of your presentation. I STRONGLY recommend using the cloud (like Google Docs or Slideshare) and the classroom computer rather than having to connect your computer or bring a thumb drive.
Grading: Presentations must cover the following:
Introduction to the tool and what it does (5 points)
At least three reasonable use cases (5 points)
A tutorial of the example website(s) (5 points)
Questions and answers (5 points)
Additional points will be awarded for
Organization and clarity (5 points)
Quality of information, including accuracy and thoroughness (5 points)
Quality of tutorial – did it successfully teach students how to get started using this tool (5 points)
NOTE: The grayed-out items are not currently open due to class size, but if you feel passionately about one of these topics, sign up for it and make your case to me.
